notes | From the editor, Ed Schwartz: The story that makes up the text of this song goes back to possibly 1781, with several variations over the following century. There were also other musical settings over the years. Heinrich Frantzen put this version of the text to this melody in 1924 for the Cologne Carnival celebration (also known as Fasching or Mardi Gras). The words were put to the refrain of the work (at the Trio) and have been quite popular across Germany since then. In the late 50’s, Louis Armstrong heard this tune while performing in Germany and put the melody in his repertoire. He completely changed the lyrics to make it his own, but played the refrain in his unique Dixieland style. Listen → |
