Gabriel Oliver “Torres” & Jaume II

Jaume II is a three-movement work commissioned by the Federació Balear de Bandes de Música in 2011 to mark the seventh centenary of the death of Jaume II, the first King of the Kingdom of Mallorca. It was premiered by the Balearic Symphonic Band on June 19, 2011, at the church of Algaida under the direction of Andreu Julià Serra.

For this composition, Biel Oliver drew inspiration from three moments in the reign of Jaume II:

• The first movement, Els inicis del regne (“The Beginnings of the Kingdom”), is structured in four themes and portrays the struggles faced by the new monarch after the division of the Crown of Aragon into two kingdoms following his father Jaume I’s death.

• Esclarmonda de Foix, the second movement, is named after the queen consort of the Kingdom of Mallorca and forms a slow piece built around two lyrical themes.

• The third movement, Les ordinacions (“The Ordinances”), refers to Jaume II’s urban planning initiatives—grid-based new towns—and is developed around a theme in the rhythm of a jota.

Nova Llaor series collection

The Nova Llaor series collection was created with the aim of showcasing the new band music being composed on our island. This creative output has been promoted in part by the Federació Balear de Bandes de Música (Balearic Federation of Wind Bands), which over the years has commissioned works from composers from or linked to the Balearic Islands. The goal has been to offer local bands an original repertoire—fresh, distinctive, and appreciated both nationally and internationally.

However, the collection is not limited solely to the commissions made by the Federation over the years. It also seeks to highlight all new compositions for concert band written in the islands. Thus, it may include works commissioned by individual bands as well as original compositions by both established and emerging composers from the Balearic Islands.

Music is a vital expression of cultural identity. Through the publication of this collection, the Balearic Federation of Wind Bands aims to foster recognition of local composers and encourage the creation of works that reflect our traditions, stories, and emotions—incorporating native elements into melody, rhythm, and style.
